Cave Painting Interview

This week we have spoke to Sam Simon the keyboard player and Adam Kane the lead singer of Cave Painting. We decided to get an interview with them because of the simply but beautiful music. We are just off to see them support Alt -J in Bristol at the Cooler.

Hi Adam and Sam from Cave Painting I have been trying to learn the basic about you guys but just cant find anything on you. Can you please introduce yourselves and what instruments you play?

Hi, I'm Adam and I sing, and the rest of the guys are, Jon McCawley - drums, Richard Snabel, bass, keyboards, vocals, Sam Simon, keyboard and vocals and last but not least, Harry Smallwood, guitar and bass.

How did you guys meet and did you decide you wanted to start a band straight away?

We all met in Brighton, though we're from all over the country. It still sort of amazes me we all happened to be in the right place at the right time.

For people who are yet to hear your music how would describe it them?

Our songs are not really minimalist, but we definitely don’t overcrowd them. Nothing is there for no reason and everything has a place

.

I first heard of you when you were announced to be supporting Alt-J, how did you get on this tour?

We begged. No seriously, its just one of those things, we wanted to do it, our management made that known to their management and it happened. We like their music and they like ours, which of course helps.

Supporting Alt-J is a massive stage to be playing as they are just getting bigger and bigger. How have you found the pressure so far?

Its not really been a pressure, the ALT-J guys are great and have made us feel really at home and we've been having a great time, which is all you can hope for when you tour!

Have you toured much before?

The current tour with ALT-J is our fourth since we signed our deal

The song 'Gator' is a great song with a brilliant video as well but I'm not completely sure I understand it, what is it about?

Gator is one of our older songs and was written shortly after the death of my Grandfather, The lyrics reflect the idea of death and the insecurities around it as well as pondering life, but also the idea of making the most of the life we have been given. So I'd like to think it is a hopeful song, however the video juxtaposes this and is slightly darker in tone. Essentially the people are there to view the body, but each person brings their own grievances, needs and anxieties.

What can we expect from you lot this year? Festivals/Gigs? Singles/E.P's?

Well, our debut album 'Votive Life' is coming out in September, and we have a single called 'So Calm' released a while before that, and we just plan to keep doing as many shows as we can, that's what we love.

Finally I always ask where did the name come from are you fans prehistoric art haha?

I think the band name's meaning for us is evolving over time. At first it was the only name that we all agreed felt right.

Thanks from the time guys, cant wait to see you in Bristol tonight (1.6.2012)  and look forward to hearing the album.
