How Green Interview

How Green has just released an E.P called 'Oh Verdure', and to us we think it is one of the best for along while. This Adelaide producer has made a big step with this electronic/hiphop E.P which was released on Avantroots records. If your a fan of Evian Christ you will enjoy this guy.
Hows it going?

Yeah really good at the moment, nice vibes in the air.

So tell us about How Green, how long has it been going?
Well iv been making music under the name How Green for roughly 2 years or so, it's my artistic alias that is free to explore all sides of experimental beats music in all it's glory.

We have read on your facebook that How Green is your 'latest' creation, what other stuff have you done before?
Iv always been involved in the electronic music scene, as a Dj for years playing drum n bass then to dub step before finding my way with my own productions in trip hop/electronica and experimental beats music. I tend to always be on the experimental side of music so when a "genre" that I'm heavily involved in turns in directions that no longer embrace experimentation, I can't help but find greener pastures.. But as a producer, your pastures are what you make them.

What made you think about making music in this style? And what would you describe it as?
I just make the music that naturally comes out of me, so I guess it's a very trip hop/ beatsy/ electronica sound at the moment, but who knows what will come out next, that may well change.

There is obviously a big hip hop influence, who do you look up to in the music world?
Guys like J-dilla and flying lotus of course, and bonobo is one if my personal heros. But there's also a guy called Galapagoose originally from Melbourne who really shaped my mind in terms of production and performance, he was a major influence on me.... iv been on a real golden era hip hop kick lately too, that stuff is untouchable.

Your latest E.P has lots of vocals, are they all samples or have you recorded much?
I wish I could sing well enough to sample my own voice.. But sadly I'm restricted to singing only in the shower. I love the loose freedoms in chopped up, incoherent vocal sampling, it's fun and abstract.

The Australia music scene is awesome, but struggles to get over the water to Europe. Can you give us some names to check out?
Australia is absolutely killing it at the moment, especially in the beats scene. I mean you've got the big guns like Flume and Ta-ku, but there's guys like Oisima, slamagotchi, able8, Oliver tank, oscar key sung, adras fox, electric sea spider, datackae, ghost soul, Oddessa, ostinato, retiree ect ect ect.. Iv definitely left some names off the list.. These guys, just to name a few, are making some seriously good music.

Saying that your signed to a Spanish label aren't you? How did this come about?
Avantroots records is a beautiful little label out of Barcelona, run by two of the nicest guys in the world, who go by the production duo 'Pulshar'.. It came about through a mutual love of art and good experimental music.

You have supported some awesome acts, we are interested to know what your live shows are like?
I try to keep each live performance spontaneous and semi improvised to keep the crowd engaged. It's basically a lay out of a whole bunch of sample pads. drums with one hand and samples with another. It's a fun time

And finally what do you prefer Mars or Cherry Ripple?
Haha.. Well we don't have cherry ripple in Australia so I'm forced to say mars.. Though cherry ripple sounds nicer

Peace

Josh Savage - Spaces E.P review

Josh Savage - Space E.P

Josh Savage is an upcoming singer/songwriter who splits his time between the UK and France. He began his musical career at a young age in the National Children’s Choir of Great Britain travelling around New Zealand and Australia. His success with the choir led to him joining many other musical ensembles including musicals, local bands and eventually, starting up bands of his own. He played his first show at the young age of 17 at The Talking Heads in Southampton. In his University days in Yorkshire, he started up the band Taming the Savage which was regularly played on BBC Introducing.

Now-a-days, Josh is preparing to release his latest E.P. ‘Spaces' in the UK and later in the year, ‘Quatre Epines’ in France. Savage is already gaining hype as the lead track off ‘Quatre Epines’ has already been played by Tom Robinson on BBC Radio 6Music.

When asked, Savage describes his music as ‘folk/rock’. He will be releasing the track ‘Your Lips’. This song starts as a slow, beautiful folk song with just Josh and his guitar, then half way through his classical influences shine through with the addition of violin. Another track off this E.P. is ‘Lost in Paris’ which was produced by Julian Simmons (credits to Ed Sheeran and Guillemots). This is another low tempo track that really shows off his voice and is accompanied by simply brilliant music. However, our favourite here at Just New Music which we would be rooting to see live, has to be ‘Horoscopes’. Can’t you just see the crowd bouncing along with the driving drum beat and shouting out 'Forget the skies…’ ? The penultimate track on this E.P. is ‘Mountains in Hurricanes’ which was featured as our track of the day in January. And finally, the E.P. finishes with a live version of ‘Your Lips’.

‘Spaces’ which is being released April 7th is well worth getting. It’s an amazing introduction to an upcoming singer/songwriter and we can see this being a great summer soundtrack. Don’t forget to keep an eye on his:

There will be two launch parties, one in Savage’s hometown, Winchester, at The Railway on the 4th of April and the second in Soho at the Spice Of Life on the 5th of April.

Where is Jamie T?

Where is Jamie T?

Jamie Alexander Treays was last seen and heard on the 22nd January 2013 on a track by Tim Timebomb called 'Wrongful Suspicion'. Jamie is now 28 years old and is a local in the Wimbledon area of London.
If anyone finds him or sees him please..................
...................... get him to finish the album and start touring.

So I'm not going to lie about this, I am a Huge fan of Jamie T. The first time i heard Jamie T was 2006 on his 'If You Got The Money' single, I remember my brother playing it to me. From that point on my brother and I have just been waiting for new releases. His debut album 'Panic Prevention' was incredible and made it in to the top 12 for the Mercury Music Prize 2007. Although the album was released nearly 7 years ago now, it hasn't aged, this is why it is voted in many different magazines as one of the best of the decade. The album hosted 3 of his most successful songs, 'Shelia', 'If You Got The Money' and 'Calm Down Dearest' which was his highest chart hit making it up to 9th spot. For the rest of 2007 Jamie and his band the Pacemakers then had a busy year playing at Glastonbury, Oxegen, Radio 1's Big Weekend (Preston) and also Benicassim in Spain which then followed by a tour in the states.

2009 was the next big year for Jamie, in January he released a video to a much faster paced song called 'Fire Fire'. The song never made it to a release nor the album, Jamie told NME 'it is just a thank you for the fans'. May saw the first release which was 'Sticks 'n' Stones', the E.P included 3 extra tracks 'St Christopher', 'The Dance Of The Young Professionals' and one of my favourite B-sides ever! 'On The Green'. Jamie T's B-sides are always worth finding, if your reading this I'm guessing you are in to your music and often B-sides are there to fill space, Jamie's could make a top album.
So in August came his second E.P of the year and second single off the up and coming album, 'Chaka Demus'. Again the E.P also came with 3 extra tracks (all amazing) one of the tracks 'Forget Me Not (The Love I Knew Before I Grew)' features Hollie Cook the daughter of Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook, who is also a brilliant recording artist well worth checking out, Hollie Cook!
September 7th 2009 was the big day, 'Kings and Queens' was released on Virgin Records. The album made it up to 2nd in the UK charts and on release BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe said it was 'flawless' and his favourite album of the year. Unfortunately the rest of the year didn't go amazing after suffering from Laryngitis and having to cancel his Australian, European and UK tours. In November he released his 3rd E.P of the year called 'The Man's Machine' with another 3 extra tracks.
2010 saw Jamie's last release 'Emily's Heart', this being his personal favourite. This year also saw him reschedule his tours and headline the John Peel stage and Glastonbury.

So now we are working with speculation from 2010 we have heard him twice, once on a track produced by Skream named 'Jason and Argonauts' this wasn't released. The most recent we heard from him was on Tim Timebomb's single 'Wrongful Suspicion' which he added backing vocals too. There has been many claims of Jamie working on his 3rd album but the latest claim seems to be a very strong one. The claim is from Manou a singer songwriter from London, its not anything she has said but its from a picture she added.

So this brings us to now, and the big question. Jamie T is known for 2 incredible albums, tons of great singles and lively shows. He is remembered as a legend and my favourite artist of all time, do we want him back? If he comes back and releases a bad album, will that ruin his whole history? What if he tries something too different? Should he just stay a legend?
We want to hear your thoughts, come and join us on Facebook and Twitter.

For me personally I'll give him another chance, I would love to see him live again!

POW Interview

Introducing POW!!!
POW have been a group we have been watching for a while, there tunes are getting bigger and better so we thought it was time to have a chat. We managed to get Natural, Vicious and JohnJoe for a quick natter about how it started and where its going.

This is one of their latest tracks featuring Natural and Old $ole.

How long has POW been going? And who is involved?

Natural: As music, has been going on since fall 2011. We used to be known as a street art crew; stencils, graffiti and slapping stickers all that. Myself, JohnJoe, Vicious Vicio, Steel Major and Old $ole which is a two man group; 9.9 and L.A.

Who started the movement? Was the plan always music?

Natural:
JohnJoe & Vicious were recording before POW was official. I was currently at California, so when i moved back i started doing music. We would always talk about having a tattoo urban skate shop and making a band, so yeah we always did wanna be in a somewhat music scene.

Vicious: We started making music together, with Danny at T.V.K. productions.

What made you start the group?

JohnJoe: I didn't start it, it was a group decision to do it. I was rapping on my own for practice but never took it seriously and i would encourage Vicious to also do it then we all decided what we were gonna do in the group, Natural originally was supposed to be our producer but plans changed as so do ideas.

Natural: This is very true, i would record these guys and i know a lil mixing and producing but i just wasn't as determined back then. These past few days i've been messing around with FL (Fruity Loops) so in time i will actually be producing more for the crew.
I actually produced a track on my E.P, its called 'Misty', L.A. from Old $ole helped me a lil that's why it actually sounded pretty dope, its actually my least played song probably cause its just an instrumental

So they have all known each other for a while?

Natural: Yes I'm one of the latest members, mostly everybody else knows each other from middle school but clicked in highschool, i came to meet em at age 15 so about 5 years, wow! Were all from a small town in Tx (Texas) called Brownsville, I just lived in Cali most of my life. Almost every member has relocated to Austin since. Steel Major still currently in Brownsville.

Was the school in Brownsville? Why did you move away?

JohnJoe: Yeah i went to a good amount of schools, i mainly moved out to further in music, it was always a goal we had when we graduated.

Whats the music scene like in Austin?

JohnJoeVery different there's a variety of everything and it amazes me, where we're from there was nothing like it. Also very inspiring i think its what kinda drives me to do better.

Vicious: Weird, we keep Austin that way. It's known as the live music capitol of the world, one of the reasons we moved here. There's a lot of indie rock, folk and psychedelic music. A lot of hip hop artist down here remind me of Houston rappers, where i come from. We want to break some rules and be different. We are trying to bring our own flavor of Austin to the rest of the world.

Natural: Amazing Sxsw (South by Southwest) makes it music paradise, I say underground hip hop needs to be praised more this year, there's always a show going on but bands mainly.

Sxsw being one of the best festivals for up and coming music, you must be buzzing about it coming back around?

JohnJoe: Yeah i am, I've been to it twice and liked every bit of it, even though i went to nothing but the free shows. Next time i go i wanna take part in it but i feel i need to still develop skills.

Do you want to play Sxsw? Have you got a plan for a show?

JohnJoe: Yeah i do, its sum thin i have been wanting to do since i started rapping.

Natural: If I played solo, I'll play lots of my E.P but with POW! probably lots of unreleased stuff, we have this song we only perform cause its never gonna drop. But i plan a couple more tracks and remix projects before Sxsw.

Have you played any gigs in Austin yet?

Vicious: Not in Austin yet. Soon as we complete our new music we will start finding gigs.

I have noticed you give a lot of your tunes away for free, why is this?

Natural: Music should be free, i don't think my stuff is worth buying, donating yes but buying just not there. I've seen multiple artist ie. Mod Sun give out all their music for free to get a bigger fan base.

How do you feel your music is doing out on the world wide web?

Natural: I honestly still feel amateur but i see potential in myself and i see that in others too. I got love from out of the states and i'm real grateful for that but as for here, we are still on the come up.

JohnJoe: I feel its still needs to be better to catch attention, i'm very picky with it, i'm my worst critic. I'm hoping what i drop catches buzz so i can at least say i've done something.

Who has/does influence your music?

Natural: Me personally, am more fond of surf or psychedelic rock, i love house music. Daft Punk and MGMT are mad inspiration to me.

JohnJoe: Mainly a lot of music i listened to as a kid growing up, rap was always on my cd player. I can kinda say it taught me how to get through hard times, just because i was able to relate so much to what each artist was saying.

Do you still listen to the older tunes? Who stands out for you?

JohnJoe: Of course, those are gonna stay with me, that's my whole childhood, but right now i listen to a lot of artists. One i could really listento is Aziz Gibson he's pretty dope.

Guy's thanks so much for your time and keep me posted on any new releases.

Towns Interview

The first we heard of Towns was at Record Store Day in Bristol Rise. We went there to listen to a couple of bands before heading to see another later that night. Everyone we spoke to that day mentioned Towns. Unfortunately we had to leave before they came on.
As soon as I got home I searched this band and regretted leaving Rise. This band reminds me of all the greats of the 90's like The Stone Roses, The Charlatans and Primal Scream but with something different maybe a modern edge. This band I am expecting to hear more and more about in the next 12 months.  So we thought we would grab a word with JP (Guitarist) and find out a bit more about them.

Hi JP for people who dont know to much about Towns yet, can you just introduce everyone and your roles is in the band?

Hi, I play guitar in the band. James Maclucas sings, Adam Hastings play bass and Miles Hastings plays drums.

How would you describe your music?

We like drum grooves and cool bass lines in music and we try to mix elements of that with distorted and dreamy guitars, noise, feedback and pop songs.

You must have a huge 90's influence as listening to some of your tunes make me think of the likes of The Stone Roses and The Charlatans, what kind of music did you listen to growing up?

Macca and I first met at school over a shared love of The Cooper Temple Clause... He leant me Kick Up The Flames and the rest, as they say, is history. But what really inspires us to be Towns is our love of bands like My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, Ride, Chapterhouse, Slowdive, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Stone Roses…We’re all really big fans of music that the list is never ending and always changing. But we don’t only listen to 90s music, we’re also fans of stuff from the 60s, 70s and 80s.

We just missed seeing you guys at Rise Record Store Day (RSD) how did it go? How would you describe one of your live shows?

The Rise show went really well. We had just supported TOY the week before so we decided to totally change the set and used Record Store Day as a chance to play some songs we’ve never played live before. It went down better than expected so we’ve added a few of those songs into our main set.
It’s hard to describe your own live show because we can never see ourselves play. But we like to play loud. It’s essential for all the feedback we like to make.

What can we expect from you guys this year? More Singles/ E.P's/ Album?

It’s hard to tell as we don’t know what opportunities are around the corner. But we have our new single coming out at the end of this month. I can see us releasing more singles later this year. I guess we’ll have to wait and see…

Where can people catch you live? Have you got many festivals planned?

We’re really looking forward to our festival slots this year. We recently played Great Escape, and are playing Liverpool Sound City this week. In fact Artrocker named us in their ten great new bands to play at Great Escape Festival this year. We were named alongside some of our favourites such as, Novella, Eagulls, Toy and The Black Belles.
Later on in the year we’re also playing Boardmaster’s and Southsea festivals while we will be playing our first show outside of the UK for a festival in Germany.
We’re really looking forward to going on tour again later this month. Here’s a list of all the live dates we’re doing:

19 May: Line Of Best Fit Stage @ Liverpool Sound City w/ The History of Apple Pie + Bleached
28 May: Barfly, London w/ Sulk
31 May: Horns, St Albans w/ Sulk
02 June: Dot to Dot festival, Bristol
04 June: Seven, Coventry
06 June: Fruit, Hull w/ Sulk
07 June: The Castle, Manchester w/ Sulk
08 June: Escobar, Leeds w/ Sulk
09 June: Stealth, Nottingham w/ Sulk

Beat The Heart Interview

Swedish Alt-Rockers, Beat The Heart, have been very busy in their short time together - their debut EP, 'Glebe Market', has seen them combine an eclectic range of influences to create a distinctive sound, from heartfelt lyrical sentiments accompanied by fragile Guitars, the to pounding Drums and Synths of our recent Track of the Day, 'Spaceship Ride'. We caught up with them to get the low-down on whats coming next for the hard-working 4-piece...

Hello, Beat The Heart. How are you all?

We’re great thanks!

First things first, how did you all meet?

Nicolas (Lead vocal/Guitar): Andreas (Drums) and me have been friends since childhood, even though we never made any music until our late teenage years. We used to go skateboarding and snowboarding together and never had any plans to start playing music. I started to write my own songs at age 16, and kept on writing them without any particular goal in mind. Eventually, Andreas and Filip joined and we started to play these songs together. It was not until last summer when Andreas' younger brother Johan joined us on lead guitar that we decided to give it a real go.

Filip (Bass): I actually used to film and photograph Andreas and Nico when they were skating. Later on, I found out that Nicolas and I were listening to the same kind of music and it didn’t take us long to pick up the guitars and try them ourselves.

Andreas (Drums): I actually joined Nicolas and Filip once and played the drums in the music room in our school. We played a couple of Swedish punk songs one day, but it really sounded like shit so we didn’t do it again. I always wanted my own band and when I was a kid I used to do playback Kiss covers at the concert day in my school. I was actually the front man in that band, but I’ve made my way back to the drums during the years.

You’ve been together for a relatively short time but you’ve already recorded and released your debut EP, ‘Glebe Market’, (which I’m listening to for the second time as I type, by the way). The finished product is well produced, ranging from delicate and soft to pounding and bold. Who inspired and influenced you while you were writing the record? I’m getting the impression you’re not just inspired by current bands or bands of one genre…

The funny thing is that we all have different tastes in music, ranging from metal, folk, indie and hip-hop. We try to take things from many different genres to create our own sound. There is so much good music out there that it’s just stupid to limit yourself and be narrow when it comes to creating to music.

One thing that was a major influence to the record was the surroundings of the studio, which is located at the loft of a barn in the Swedish countryside. It was such a relief to go away for a couple of days and be able to only focus on our music. It felt like we were living the stereotypical life of a recording artist, completely isolated on a farm.

Obviously all (decent) songs are written with a particular emotion in mind, but yours seem particularly personal, like there’s a real weight behind them, am I right?

When I started writing music, I used to write lyrics that felt cool and mysterious, even though I didn’t have a clue what I was writing about. As I look back, I realise that the best thing, in my opinion, is to write about things you know and to be personal - not to imitate your favourite bands. When we started Beat The Heart, I wanted the songs to be honest because I had a need to express myself about life. For me, the best singers are not necessarily those with the greatest voices, but those who you can tell really mean every word that they sing, whether the songs are about real life or not. Hopefully, the lyrics will continue to be in that way. It’s natural to write about what you know and how you feel at the same moment you come up with a new song.

It's available for purchase, via the iTunes store.

So, you carved out a unique sound with ‘Glebe Market’, but what have you been up to since. I see you have your new single, ‘Nurse Me (With Your Soul)’, out today (29th July)…

We actually recorded the new EP a couple of weeks after we released Glebe Market (26th March), but since then we have been playing a lot of gigs in and around Stockholm. Simultaneously, we have been writing a lot of new stuff, so there is more to come after our new EP, which is to be released in late August.

What’s the new EP called, and when/where can we get it! And do you have anything special planned for the release?

The new EP is called 'It Never Ends' and will be available in late August on iTunes, Spotify, Soundcloud and so on. We’re planning a release party and hopefully a music video will be done by then.

What can we expect to hear with the new material? Has your sound changed at all?

'Glebe Market' was our first time in a real studio so we learned a lot during the recording of that record. We have developed on the sound that you can hear on the songs, 'Spaceship Ride' and 'Glebe Market'. One of the new songs has got a really psychedelic vibe to it so we are excited for you guys to hear that.

What’s the scene like over in Sweden? We know you’ve been busy with writing, have you been gigging much too? Anything you’re particularly proud of?

We’ve had a bunch of shows as we mentioned, but nothing fancy really. Although, we played quite a big park festival in the middle of Stockholm about a month ago, which was great fun! There are lots of talented musicians from Sweden but it’s hard to break ground as a new artist, especially in Stockholm. Promoters don’t have that much patience with bands, and in this day and age everyone is supposed to be ready with a hit from the start. We’ve been lucky with lots of gigs but we feel that lots of great music falls out because of this.

What would your ideal festival line-up be? (With you supporting, naturally.)

We argue to much about this so everyone gets to make their own line-up:

Andreas: Pink Floyd (David Gilmour), Pearl Jam, Ghost, In Solitude, Alice in chains with Lane Staley and Bon Iver would be cool.

Filip: I would go to any festival that booked Radiohead. Besides them I would like to see Villagers, Tame Impala, the Swedish band, I Break Horses, and an acoustic session with Jackson Browne.

Nicolas: A Simon and Garfunkel reunion with a healthy Art would be totally awesome. My Morning Jacket and Wilco are two of the best live bands I’ve seen, I would love to see them again. The Band, with good ol’ Levon Helm behind the drums and Gram Parsons on guest vocals, would be magic. Finally, I must say Swedish Broder Daniel back in their prime in the 90’s.

Johan: Ghost, Kings Of Leon, My Morning Jacket, Graveyard and Bon Iver.

And finally, cats or dogs?

Filip, Andreas and Johan have all got cats. We suspect that Filip’s cat is getting Alzheimers. It’s quite annoying actually. For the cat as well. I think we all like dogs more though.

Kidsmoke Interview

The Manchester music scene has been strong since the late 80's, with bands like Joy Division, The Smiths and The Stone Roses proudly hailing from there;
this Welsh 4 piece has moved there to integrate into the scene and make their impact.
The first tune we heard from these lads, 'Take Me To The River', immediately became our Track of the Day. They'll be releasing their debut E.P at the end of the month, and with this just around the corner we thought it would be nice to get to know them. So...........

Hey guys, how long have you known each other, and been playing together?

(Kidsmoke) has only been going since January 2013, but we have known each other for a long time, from previous bands. The principle song writing duo of the band met, and began exchanging ideas, at around the age of 4.

We see the likes of The Smiths, Joy Division and Deerhunter are big influences on you, how would you describe your style of music, and what other bands have influenced you?

We are in a similar vain to those bands you mentioned. More melodic bands have had a big influence on our song writing; obviously The Beatles, The Beach Boys... a lot of the sixties groups. It's about trying to find a way of creating a memorable melody whilst keeping your songs interesting and different.

We really enjoy the track 'Take Me To The River' and we understand you have an E.P coming out soon? What can people expect to hear on it?

The EP is called 'Higher' which is also the name of the lead track. That one is of a similar style to 'Take Me To The River', but we have a more experimental one on there and one that is quite simple too. It's quite a varied EP. We're still finding our sound.

Manchester has been a huge part of the whole English music scene, how is it doing now? Any bands that you would recommend to us?

We are based in Manchester but we moved up from Wales to go into Uni a few years ago. I don't think that we'd be best qualified to give the verdict on how Manchester is doing at the moment, but it is quite inspiring when some of your favourite bands are from here. Like hearing Morrissey singing about Whalley Range and you think "oh yeah that's where I live".

Where can people catch you playing live?

The EP launch will be in The Compass in Chester on 30th August. Before that we play Dulcimer on 24th August supporting Blaue Blume. We will keep adding dates as we go - the Facebook
page will be the best place to check.

What would your dream gig be? And what bands would you have supporting you, dead or alive?

Primavera is a festival we really like. To play there would be ace. The Beatles in 1966 form would be a pretty decent support band. I'm sure some of the band might like to see The Smiths reform for that one too. Elliott Smith would be a good acoustic opener.

And finally Snickers or Mars Bar?

Mars. But we would prefer some cans.
