How Green Interview

How Green has just released an E.P called 'Oh Verdure', and to us we think it is one of the best for along while. This Adelaide producer has made a big step with this electronic/hiphop E.P which was released on Avantroots records. If your a fan of Evian Christ you will enjoy this guy.

Hows it going? 

Yeah really good at the moment, nice vibes in the air.

So tell us about How Green, how long has it been going?

Well iv been making music under the name How Green for roughly 2 years or so, it's my artistic alias that is free to explore all sides of experimental beats music in all it's glory.

We have read on your facebook that How Green is your 'latest' creation, what other stuff have you done before?

Iv always been involved in the electronic music scene, as a Dj for years playing drum n bass then to dub step before finding my way with my own productions in trip hop/electronica and experimental beats music. I tend to always be on the experimental side of music so when a "genre" that I'm heavily involved in turns in directions that no longer embrace experimentation, I can't help but find greener pastures.. But as a producer, your pastures are what you make them.

What made you think about making music in this style? And what would you describe it as?

I just make the music that naturally comes out of me, so I guess it's a very trip hop/ beatsy/ electronica sound at the moment, but who knows what will come out next, that may well change.

There is obviously a big hip hop influence, who do you look up to in the music world? 

Guys like J-dilla and flying lotus of course, and bonobo is one if my personal heros. But there's also a guy called Galapagoose originally from Melbourne who really shaped my mind in terms of production and performance, he was a major influence on me.... iv been on a real golden era hip hop kick lately too, that stuff is untouchable.

Your latest E.P has lots of vocals, are they all samples or have you recorded much? 

I wish I could sing well enough to sample my own voice.. But sadly I'm restricted to singing only in the shower. I love the loose freedoms in chopped up, incoherent vocal sampling, it's fun and abstract.

The Australia music scene is awesome, but struggles to get over the water to Europe. Can you give us some names to check out?

Australia is absolutely killing it at the moment, especially in the beats scene. I mean you've got the big guns like Flume and Ta-ku, but there's guys like Oisima, slamagotchi, able8, Oliver tank, oscar key sung, adras fox, electric sea spider, datackae, ghost soul, Oddessa, ostinato, retiree ect ect ect.. Iv definitely left some names off the list.. These guys, just to name a few, are making some seriously good music.

Saying that your signed to a Spanish label aren't you? How did this come about?

Avantroots records is a beautiful little label out of Barcelona, run by two of the nicest guys in the world, who go by the production duo 'Pulshar'.. It came about through a mutual love of art and good experimental music.

You have supported some awesome acts, we are interested to know what your live shows are like?

I try to keep each live performance spontaneous and semi improvised to keep the crowd engaged. It's basically a lay out of a whole bunch of sample pads. drums with one hand and samples with another. It's a fun time

And finally what do you prefer Mars or Cherry Ripple?

Haha.. Well we don't have cherry ripple in Australia so I'm forced to say mars.. Though cherry ripple sounds nicer

Josh Savage - Spaces E.P review

Josh Savage - Space E.P

Josh Savage is an upcoming singer/songwriter who splits his time between the UK and France. He began his musical career at a young age in the National Children’s Choir of Great Britain travelling around New Zealand and Australia. His success with the choir led to him joining many other musical ensembles including musicals, local bands and eventually, starting up bands of his own. He played his first show at the young age of 17 at The Talking Heads in Southampton. In his University days in Yorkshire, he started up the band Taming the Savage which was regularly played on BBC Introducing. 

Now-a-days, Josh is preparing to release his latest E.P. ‘Spaces' in the UK and later in the year, ‘Quatre Epines’ in France. Savage is already gaining hype as the lead track off ‘Quatre Epines’ has already been played by Tom Robinson on BBC Radio 6Music.

When asked, Savage describes his music as ‘folk/rock’. He will be releasing the track ‘Your Lips’. This song starts as a slow, beautiful folk song with just Josh and his guitar, then half way through his classical influences shine through with the addition of violin. Another track off this E.P. is ‘Lost in Paris’ which was produced by Julian Simmons (credits to Ed Sheeran and Guillemots). This is another low tempo track that really shows off his voice and is accompanied by simply brilliant music. However, our favourite here at Just New Music which we would be rooting to see live, has to be ‘Horoscopes’. Can’t you just see the crowd bouncing along with the driving drum beat and shouting out 'Forget the skies…’ ? The penultimate track on this E.P. is ‘Mountains in Hurricanes’ which was featured as our track of the day in January. And finally, the E.P. finishes with a live version of ‘Your Lips’. 

‘Spaces’ which is being released April 7th is well worth getting. It’s an amazing introduction to an upcoming singer/songwriter and we can see this being a great summer soundtrack. Don’t forget to keep an eye on his:

Where is Jamie T?

Jamie Alexander Treays was last seen and heard on the 22nd January 2013 on a track by Tim Timebomb called 'Wrongful Suspicion'. Jamie is now 28 years old and is a local in the Wimbledon area of London. 

If anyone finds him or sees him please..................

...................... get him to finish the album and start touring.

So I'm not going to lie about this, I am a Huge fan of Jamie T. The first time i heard Jamie T was 2006 on his 'If You Got The Money' single, I remember my brother playing it to me. From that point on my brother and I have just been waiting for new releases. His debut album 'Panic Prevention' was incredible and made it in to the top 12 for the Mercury Music Prize 2007. Although the album was released nearly 7 years ago now, it hasn't aged, this is why it is voted in many different magazines as one of the best of the decade. The album hosted 3 of his most successful songs, 'Shelia', 'If You Got The Money' and 'Calm Down Dearest' which was his highest chart hit making it up to 9th spot. For the rest of 2007 Jamie and his band the Pacemakers then had a busy year playing at Glastonbury, Oxegen, Radio 1's Big Weekend (Preston) and also Benicassim in Spain which then followed by a tour in the states.

2009 was the next big year for Jamie, in January he released a video to a much faster paced song called 'Fire Fire'. The song never made it to a release nor the album, Jamie told NME 'it is just a thank you for the fans'. May saw the first release which was 'Sticks 'n' Stones', the E.P included 3 extra tracks 'St Christopher', 'The Dance Of The Young Professionals' and one of my favourite B-sides ever! 'On The Green'. Jamie T's B-sides are always worth finding, if your reading this I'm guessing you are in to your music and often B-sides are there to fill space, Jamie's could make a top album. 

So in August came his second E.P of the year and second single off the up and coming album, 'Chaka Demus'. Again the E.P also came with 3 extra tracks (all amazing) one of the tracks 'Forget Me Not (The Love I Knew Before I Grew)' features Hollie Cook the daughter of Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook, who is also a brilliant recording artist well worth checking out, Hollie Cook!
September 7th 2009 was the big day, 'Kings and Queens' was released on Virgin Records. The album made it up to 2nd in the UK charts and on release BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe said it was 'flawless' and his favourite album of the year. Unfortunately the rest of the year didn't go amazing after suffering from Laryngitis and having to cancel his Australian, European and UK tours. In November he released his 3rd E.P of the year called 'The Man's Machine' with another 3 extra tracks.
2010 saw Jamie's last release 'Emily's Heart', this being his personal favourite. This year also saw him reschedule his tours and headline the John Peel stage and Glastonbury. 

So now we are working with speculation from 2010 we have heard him twice, once on a track produced by Skream named 'Jason and Argonauts' this wasn't released. The most recent we heard from him was on Tim Timebomb's single 'Wrongful Suspicion' which he added backing vocals too. There has been many claims of Jamie working on his 3rd album but the latest claim seems to be a very strong one. The claim is from Manou a singer songwriter from London, its not anything she has said but its from a picture she added.   

So this brings us to now, and the big question. Jamie T is known for 2 incredible albums, tons of great singles and lively shows. He is remembered as a legend and my favourite artist of all time, do we want him back? If he comes back and releases a bad album, will that ruin his whole history? What if he tries something too different? Should he just stay a legend?

I AM HORSE Interview

I AM HORSE came on to our radar a long time ago with help from our friends at Audiophiles. We were fans straight away of their strange mix of electronic, folk and bits of everything else. They have been around for a while, as the album was coming out we decided to chat to them and find out what it takes to make the album and how it all started. 

Hello I Am Horse how are you? Excited about the album?

We're very excited about our debut album, it’s taken a year of hard graft, and we are very happy and proud of what we've produced.

How long have you guys been playing together? Have you known each other a long time?

Susanne and Magda have been friends for years and played together in a band in Brighton about 10 years ago. When Susanne moved to Bristol in 2009 the pair formed I am horse.

Magda met Anna through mutual friends and asked her to join as we'd been told she was an ace pianist. We had a fourth member, Kate, who plays violin on the album but she left to pursue other ventures. Since then we have 'floating' string players - so our current line-up sometimes includes Rebecca on violin and Will on cello (a boy nussled his way into the stable when we weren't looking....!).

Who plays what in the band? How long have you been playing them?

We're all multi-instrumentalists, so there’s a lot of swapping around and a lot of instruments.

Magda is the lead singer and also is the Loop-master, plays flute, synth, glockenspiel and melodica. She has been singing and writing songs since she was a kid, and the instruments above she has picked up on the way (although there was a year of flute lessons at school).

Susanne is drummer extraordinaire, but not only that, she also plays synth, clarinet and melodica. Suz has also been writing and playing music on the circuit for many years.

Anna has played piano since she was 5 and though always desperate to perform she spent the majority of her adult life waiting to be asked!

So the album, how long did it take to sort out I can’t imagine it’s a quick process?

The album took over a year, as first we deconstructed all our tracks and then put them back together again. Playing live can be much more spontaneous, but when it comes to recording, and with all the instruments we use, each part needed to be locked down. So yeah, it took a long time, but we think it was worth it!

Are there any tracks on the album which stand out to be your favourite?

That's such a hard question! We worked so hard on them all – what’s your favourite?! 

‘Pictures of you’ really stands out for me and from the first time I heard it I have wanted to know the background, what’s/who’s it about? 

Pictures is one of our oldest songs and it’s great that you like it. We're a bit shy about giving away too much detail, but it’s about when you are really into someone (in a slightly stalkerish way), and they don't realise it. In your head you've created something that isn't actually real, so it’s like being in love, but the other person hasn't noticed. Anyone who has ever drifted onto the obsessive richter scale will have an affinity with this track.....

Have you been playing the album out live yet? 

We're saving ourselves for the launch! Many of the tracks have been part of our live set and we find that the response to them will depend on the audience. Our songs drift from classical/folkie feel through to electronic/dance stuff, so if we're playing a more folkie night, something like To Weston goes down a storm, whereas if it’s more electronic, Fade Away is a big favourite. Pictures is definitely the sing-a-long track.

Bristol is your hometown right? Where else have you played do you have a gig which was especially good?

We're all Bristol-based, and we've played in most of the venues here over the last couple of years. Our favourite and best gig is easy - supporting Kyla La Grange last October downstairs at the Thekla. We had an hour sound check, and Matt (the sound man) made us sound amazing. There were loads of people and there was such a buzz in the room - feel excited again now thinking about it!

Bristol’s music scene has seemed too exploded in the past year to an even greater level, is there any other bands you may suggest to people who are digging your music? 

Bristol is a great place to be a band at the moment. Guess we should plug our mates - Joyce the Librarian and Billy the Strange and Bernadette Pike - two great bands, definitely worth catching. Love a bit of Lonely Tourist, and for some proper punk, Crash Paris are a must.

We always wind up an interview with the same question and I’m hoping there is a great answer to it from you guys, where did I Am Horse’s name come from?

We are all massive equestrian enthusiasts. Susanne's 'my little pony collection' is second to none. Anna is big on the dressage circuit and Magda spent a large chunk of her childhood clip-cloping around Medway insisting she was a horse.

The Little Indians Album Interview

Now I know we are suppose to be non-biased but we love this band. The Little Indians produce fantastic pop/indie, by the second time you hear one of their songs you will be singing a long. We thought we would catch up with Augustine and Kyle about their album which is finally ready after a 11 months of recording and mixing. I interviewed these two from Baltimore before and just found out about them and how they started, if you follow the link below you can read it.

First Interview

Hi guys how have you been since our first interview?

Pretty alright. We've mostly been working on finishing the album and, working.

Since Augustine came back from the tour with Hellogoodbye (How did that go by the way?) has this made you want to get out and tour with Little Indians or are you happy to be at home for a while?

It was a great run of shows with Hellogoodbye. We definitely want to tour to some extent though. Everyone is busy with a lot of real life stuff though that's getting in the way…and life is expensive and time consuming. Forrest from HGB is gearing up to make a new album, so hopefully we'll pull together dates while that's going on. We're quite proud of the record, and we'd like to play it for an audience.

Have you an idea on a full band for you guys to play with yet, as there is only two of you?

We have friends who are down to play. But it's proving to be a little difficult to get schedules to align and all that. When I said life is getting in the way, that's sort of what I mean. But it will fall into place I'm sure.

Ok the album, this is an album I'm really excited about when can we expect to hear it?

Towards the end of the summer!

I know you must of heard the album a lot but is there a song which sticks out to you? What's the feel to the song?

I think the coolest track right now to me is the last song, "Night Owl". I wrote it around this time last year and it was the last one we finished recording. It has a lot of different elements that I enjoy. It feature a guitar through a Leslie cabinet, a ukulele solo, and a violin arrangement. Oh, and I had my family sing along a big vocal part at the end. The songs starts small and grows into a big orgy of melody. It's hard to explain, but it came out just like I envisioned. I think that's my favorite part. We wrote it last summer and it took 11 months to finish it with all the elements. Also, Max Kuzmyak played horns on it, and other songs. It just has a good feeling to it, I suppose.

How was it getting your family involved? Was it weird trying to boss your parents around as for most of your life its them doing that to you? And what do they think of the end result?

It was really fun. There wasn't really any bossing going on. I just kind of said hey "sing this line with me" and "clap your hands like this when I count to 4". It was fun though. Memorable experiences for sure. It truly is a homemade album.

The tracks from you guys we have heard so far are brilliantly catchy indie/pop songs, does the album have the same sound the whole way though?

Thanks! On a broad level, it's all indie/pop, yeah. Some are more rock and some are more pop, I suppose.

When we last spoke you said that you had recorded the album but was struggling to get it mastered and mixed. Who done it in the end?

I mixed here at my house, and Dave Downham mastered it.

How did you find the mixing stage? Is it the first time you have done it?

Mixing myself was the best decision I made, I think. It was the first time I've mixed a song, so it was a learning experience. That's why it took so long. But in the end I feel like I grew quite a bit as a mixing engineer because of the time I put into it. Having no prior experience or training, it was all trial and error. I would send mixes to friends and get opinions and then go back and change it up again and again. That's one of the beautiful aspects of digital recording. When I got towards the end of mixing I realized how much creativity goes into mixing. It's like a whole other art form after the writing and tracking process. So yeah, all that said, I'm pretty stoked with the way it turned out. I can't see us doing the next record any differently.

A lot of the time bands play around with tracks they have released before to put them on the album, have you re-recorded the tracks we have again?

Yes, we did re-record most of Let's Split and What Makes You Grin? - I did keep the vocals though, as to not lose too much of the original feeling. Actually, that was a common thing for me. I would write and record a song. Then we would go back, usually, and re-record guitars, bass, sometimes drums, etc. to make it a bit more refined. However for the most part I usually ended up keeping the vocals. They seemed to have more feeling and in the end I didn't want to lose that.
