Thanks to Deep Kick for this interview what a great bunch of guys.
OK, lets start right at the beginning....How do you guys know each other and how did Deep Kick get started? It all started when David and Fantin met in a music school in their city of Neuchâtel, Switzerland. That was a real musical crush and the start of a natural friendship. They immediately started playing together and creating songs, under the name of Deep Kick, with 2 friends joining them on guitars. After one year and a half, they decided they wanted to take things to the next level and get serious about the band, which wasn't the case of the 2 guitarists they were working with. At that time -it was in January of 2010-, they met Filo, which was already known as one of the strongest young guitarists in the city, and asked him if he wanted to try and rehearse with them. He accepted, and everything went better than expected: Filo learned the songs quickly, adding his personal touch to them and mixing both guitar parts into one of his own. They started composing new songs, and they realised that the balance was finally there; they always had this fantasy of playing as a power-trio... And they finally could!Since then, it's been 2 years of fun and lots of work. And it is surely only the beginning!I have noticed that you have quite a few songs but no album as yet, if and when can we expect one?
This is definitely the next step. We are planning to record our debut album this autumn, it should be out early 2013 if everything goes well!I have seen your live video of track 'Your Momma,' that's a big crowd your playing in front of, but you look fine. Do you ever get nervous before a performance?I guess each one of us has its own perception of getting nervous at shows. One might be stressed like hell before the concert, and forgetting it all the moment he jumps on stage. The other may be totally relaxed before, and get nervous when he arrives on stage in front of people. But it always disappears after the first songs: we really just have fun on stage, whether we're facing 30 or 3000 people. As soon as they are into it as much as we are! haha.
I really like that your bring back the whole funky rock sound, I'm a huge fan of the early Red Hot Chili Peppers and you remind me a lot of them. Did you take your band name from the song of RHCP's One Hot Minute album?Thank you. It's true that David -our bassist- was really influenced by a lot of funk music, maybe especially this funk-rock sound you're talking about. And being our main creative force when we write music, it may be why you hear that in our songs in the end. Even though it's always great to be compared to artists that you love, I think it can be tricky when people start thinking we want to be just like them. Our music is a mix of lots of influences, far from being only the Peppers, but people have the bad habit of saying: "This bassist = slap like Flea, then this guys = RHCP wannabe's". Of course I'm making it sounds stupid here, but you get the point: you get labeled so quick! I really think people should listen to all of our songs before comparing us to one band only. And to answer your question, the name "Deep Kick" was more of a shout out than anything else. We didn't want to copy anybody, we just wanted a name that suits us: short, fresh and punchy, kinda "in-your-face" thing.
What other bands influences you? Can I detect a little Sublime in there too?
Influences in our bands are really diverse and surprising at times. David surely likes Sublime a lot, he's into lots of music styles, even though his first love is funk-rock. Meanwhile, Filo is more into bands like Pink floyd, Led Zeppelin, Zappa or Queen, but also many others... And Fantin listens to many different things too, from punk/rock to a lot of folk music, he's generally more attracted to indie acts. What we might have in common are artists like Primus, Incubus, Rage Against the Machine or Bumblefoot. Are there any other good bands in Switzerland that our readers should know about?
Definitely a lot. For example, there's a young funk band called Tie & Tuxedo you should check out, and also a rock band called The Rambling Wheels which is quite famous in our country.
And finally when will we be seeing you in England?
When we'll have the money to do it, and more importantly, booking contacts there! Don't hesitate in contacting us if you know some of those who could be interested in Deep Kick! As you can guess, we need a little bit of structure if we want to plan something like this. It's not as easy as it seems...
