Neotropics Interview

After seeing these lads support Various Cruelties at Thekla we decided it would be interesting to find out more about them. So we managed to speak to Bryn about their E.P and their own dubstep remix of 'Running'.

Hi Neotropics for people who dont know you yet, who plays what?

Bryn - Vocals/Guitar/atmospherics
Rhys - Bass/Vocals
Tom - Drums

How did the band start and how long have you been going?

We started in January 2011, so just over a year now. Me & my brother (Rhys) decided to start a band straight after we went to a Linkin Park show.

Your sound is quite different to Linkin Park, who are your influences?

We like so many styles of music. I'm a huge fan of Deadmau5 & the Anjunadeep dance label. Band-wise we all love Friendly Fires, Paramore, Bring me the Horizon, The Naked & Famous & Bloc Party.

Your E.P was out in October 'Make Sure' for people who haven't heard it how would explain the sound?

It's very modern pop music with big soundscapes, big drums & a load of electronics. It's heavily influenced by house music but it still has a very 'bandy' feel.

The E.P you can get worldwide on Itunes just follow this link Neotropics ItunesThis is 'Running' off the their debut E.P.

You have also released a 'dubstep' remix of 'Running' who did the remix, was it your idea?

Yeh, I (Bryn) remixed that. Its the first dubstep track I've produced. I was literally just messing around & uploaded a 30 second clip to Soundcloud. Within about a day a small label wanted to release it so I had to cobble a track together!

Which producer do you like in the dubstep world? Which label has released the track?

Ah Skrillex is the boy. He just does it best. I've seen him a couple of times. It's the most intense environment. The label who released the Remix is called Dirt, Lies & Audio. Here's the link to it. Juno Download

Being from a city like Bristol with its huge dubstep scene, what's your feeling about dubstep?

Yeh we all love it. It's so good to see live.

How did you manage to get the gig at Thekla supporting Various Cruelties? Are you a fan of them?

To be honest i hadn't heard of them before we were offered the show. I checked out the video online - its not something i would normally listen to but it was a great performance!

When can we expect some new music? Is it another E.P or will it be a single or album?

We've just started recording a new E.P actually. We should have a new song up within the next couple of weeks. Really excited about this stuff. It's much more focused than the last E.P.

For people wanting to see you live (highly recommended by us), where and when?

Oh Cheers! Our next show in Bristol is at the Louisiana on the 20th June!

Finally where did the name come from?

Hmm, many hours of looking through dictionaries. We just wanted something that sounded right. We nearly went with 'She's made of Iron'.
