This is the final interview of our trio.
Kites are a band with so much going on with gig's, a video being recorded, single release and their also on a US advert for Andaz West Hollywood Hotel, which are also giving out their track 'Art Tastes Better Blind' free on their key cards (Is this normal?)
Anyway these guys have been together for nearly 2 years comprising of Richard Baldwin (Electronics), Jasper Perkins (Guitar), Ed Harris (Percussion) and Matthew Phillips (Vocals). This is a great band to get in to as they have an album's worth of tunes in E.P's and loads more to come. You have heard this a million times but doesn't stop me, keep an eye on this band!
Ms Georgie Okell abdicated and joined T4. She is, and will always be, a Kite. There is a grotesque amount of love and affection between us. However, please allow me to introduce Mr Edwin Harris, formerly of the Holloways, who we press-ganged into joining the band. We’re very pleased he hasn’t tried to escape. Yet.
How did Kites start? Did you drop other things to be in the band?
Music requires undivided and steadfast attention. It is an incredibly demanding and selfish mistress and I wouldn’t advise anyone to be in a band unless they can give themselves to it entirely. We started in the Autumn of 2010 and it has been my love affair ever since.
What were your kind of influences when starting? Is it fair to say there is a very 80's feel to your sound?
Personally, I wanted to be able to mimic Jim Morrison, except without the swollen belly or penchant for on-stage nudity. You could say that I have very simple ambitions. There is certainly a new-romantic aesthetic to our music. Heaven knows how that transpired! In all seriousness, each member of the band has a very different taste in music and I hope that these varying influences manifest themselves in our music, giving it depth and vision.
Their release last October had two tracks, this is the title track 'Brother'.
You have toured with some pretty impressive bands such as Gary Numan, Bloc Party and Jarvis Cocker to name a few. Who would you say is your favourite?
We’ve been incredibly fortunate to play with a host of illustrious artists, many of whom are equal in talent to the aforementioned names, but still under the radar of the music press. In particular, the fabulous ‘Look, Stranger!’ have shared many stages with us and have delighted audiences everywhere with their unique brand of falsetto allegro pop.
Where can people catch you live this year? Are you playing many festivals?
My organisational talents leave a lot to be desired. As such, I would counsel you all to investigate our website – wearekites.com – to establish what festivals we are playing this summer. I will do the same myself immediately after this interview!
You must be working hard to get your new single out there ' This Jumped-up Boy In Livery'? When is it out, June sometime?
We’re scandalously excited about the forthcoming release of ‘This Jumped-Up Boy In Livery. It is coming out imminently and, if you will permit some mild arrogance, the video is going to be sublime. After all, it’s based upon Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times.

What else can your fans expect this year singles/ E.P/ album?
Theatre, mainly theatre. It has been said that Kites like to put on a spectacle. Elsewhere, we’re already preparing the release of another song called History. It’s our most upbeat and cinematic track to date. I thought it was about time that Kites changed its typical mourning rags and donned some colour.
For my last question I always ask where did the name come from?
It stems from a desire for purity and the fact that we quite literally want to take flight!
Thanks for the time guys and I will hope to hear from you soon.
It’s our pleasure.
