Park Bench Society Interview

This week we have been lucky enough to speak Park Bench Society. This very young band are made up of Murray (Singer, Keys, Ukulele and Guitar), Laurence (Lead Guitar) and David (Xylophone, Glockenspiel, Drums, Backing Vocals).
We spoke to Murray about how the band got noticed by Huw Stephens, their sound and who has influenced them into there acoustics indie. This band is so young and packed with talent a big band to keep your eye on this year!

Hi Park Bench Society we have just heard of you after hearing you being played on by the legend which is Huw Stephens, do you know how he heard of you guys?

I met him at Abbey Road studios at an event organised by the BBC. I gave him our EP and he has played in on his how several times since! He is a lovely man.

You lot look so young, how old are you? How long have you been going?

We are all 16 and have only been formed a year. Having said that we have been playing music individually and in other groups for years, but pbs formed last summer in Davids garden.

When I first heard you on Radio 1 I straight away thought it was Jamie T bring out a new song, but when i heard it properly I noticed it wasn't. He must be an influence? Who else do you listen to?

Lyrically we take huge inspiration from Jamie T and Alex Turner. I am also heavily influenced by the word play of hip-hop artists such as Scroobius Pip, Aesop Rock and Cannibal Ox. We try combine our word play with an emotional delivery. We all listen to different styles of music which we believe is important in creating an original style.

Have you always been in to that kind of music? Everyone has an guilty pleasure what's yours?

To be perfectly honest hardly any of us listen to acoustic music mainly so our style is quite surprising. We like to think that we have created our own style in which we can enjoy originality and youthfulness. It is important to listen to everything for what it is and not just shun it. We have a tenancy to generalize music and put it into genres and categories and pbs really mixes that up because it can't be pigeon holed easily.

You have just done some live gigs, how did they go? Do you like playing live?

We have done quite a few shows and we are playing at several festivals this summer. We love playing live and try to dance about and enjoy ourselves as much as possible.

The E.P is fantastic guys when can we expect some new stuff?

We are working on a new EP now which should be out towards the end of the year. Our debut EP, 'Forest Gate' is available for download on iTunes.

When can people get out and see you live?

Festivals and shows. The best way to experience music is from a live performance. For details of our gigs head to the facebook page!

Finally I have ask where did the name come from?

We have no idea.

Nice to hear these guys at the moment as I seem to be missing Jamie T a lot and these guys really remind me of him.
