The Love Junkies 'These guys have the live chops – a short sharp burst of really great fiery frenetic indie rock.' that's from Triple J. So these guys are getting recognised from some of top Australia radio stations and blogs, there's no wonder why.
I first saw these guys in Perth a couple of months ago and they do really impress straight away with their fantastic riffs crashing in to hard grunge rock. The recordings are as furious as their live show and if their playing your town GO AND SEE THEM!!!!
We all met in high school when we were fifteen. Lewis and I started making music together not long after the introductions and Robbie was one of our closest friends. It was a year or so after high school that Robbie picked up the bass and we became "The Love Junkies" so I would say we've been doing this for a about three years now.
What kind of bands did you listen to when growing up? Do you think they are still a strong influence in your music?
What we listened to was quite eclectic but we all shared the love for grunge and punk rock. Nirvana was obviously the gateway band that led to discovering bands like Mudhoney and Sonic Youth. We were all baptised by hardcore when we hit our teens, so that has helped shape our sound with bands like the Refused being one of our biggest influences. Also there's some Australian influences like Rowland. S. Howard and The Drones, and I'm such a sucker for the blues and 50's and 60's pop. There's a lot there. I still think all these sounds are very present in our music but we've been writing for a long time now and are slowly crafting something to call our own.
So we have read on your Facebook a little while ago that your album is finished, you must be excited right? How long have you been working on it?
We recorded the album a quarter of the way through last year in the space of a week. The reason why it's taken so long to release is money really. These things aren't cheap, especially when you want to do it properly. So though frustrating, we've had to try and be patient with this one in hoping that we receive more benefits haha. We are all very excited, though it does feel a little dated now. We write quickly so there is already a couple new albums that are resting on the shelf. The Plan is to give birth to this baby in June and I can't wait to see how some new jams go down amongst the crowd.
Can you tell us a bit about the recording process? Do you enjoy it or do you just want to get out there and play live?
The recording process is one of my favourites. It's like being a child, and you've rented out the most bad ass playground in the world for a week and you can do anything you want. It inspires your creativity and it's the end point of the song writing process. When an idea finally reaches its fullest potential. I think we love playing just as much though. You can't top a good show. When the crowd and ourselves are bouncing off of each other. It's a beautiful feeling.
We saw you live back in Perth and it was full of energy, is there a gig which stands out to be the best so far? Any rock n roll story's?
Probably Big Day Out 2013. We were all very shocked at the crowds response. All the stories that come to mind are probably inappropriate haha.
That has to be one of the best days of my life. The crowd built up so quickly and there were sing-a-longs and screaming. We didn't expect that so early in the morning. I was fairly inebriated after that so I didn't see too much haha. Got down to the Chilis though.
Obviously you have the album on the way, but what else is planned for 2013?
We got a couple of Australian tours lined up, one being for our album. Work our arses off trying to promote this record then jump back into the studio at the end of the year for the next one.
We always ask as we are always interested is there anything behind the name or was it just one of those ideas?
My father came up with it. Lewis and I used to work for my dad as labourers when we finished high school. We seemed to always have lady issues and that's what he labelled us.
Cheers for the time lads and hope you have a great year.
