This week we thought before we go and see this band support Various Cruelties we want to find out who they are? It turns out they are some cheeky lads and lady from Bristol, releasing some good soulful pop.
Hi Most Planes Land for anyone new to you how did it all start?
We’ve all been playing in a shit load of bands in Bristol and London for ages, I was singing with anyone who’d let me and Diego our drummer has been hitting up the Spanish ears in Bristol for a while, our bassist Ollie plays a lot of ‘urban’ music and our keyboardist Sarah is in The Lasting Days. So in answer to your question, we’ve known each other for a while so it was a fairly natural progression to work something out and it was probably something to do with boozy booze.
How do you describe your sound to people who haven’t yet heard you?
We used to be a fair bit heavier, but we love old soul from the 50’s and 60’s, stuff like Jackie Wilson and Sam Cooke, so our tone is trying to emulate that I guess? We definitely class ourselves as a pop band, unashamedly, we like to see what we can cram into three and a half minutes.
Bristol seems to me that it has a great music scene at the moment with loads of great bands playing there such as Various Cruelties which your supporting at Thekla, how did this come about?
It was a long drawn out process of sleeping with pretty much every member of the Thekla staff, starting with the cleaners and moving up through the front of house staff and ending with the management. I haven’t slept in my bed for six weeks, just to secure this gig, I do hope it’s worth it – my chaps in a bad way.
Your songs like 'Gravity' reminds me of quite a classic sound, who are your influences? Do listen to a range of new and old?
Gravity was a homage to Jackie Wilson for sure, we know of course that it sounds nothing like him which is great, we just loved the simplicity of three or four instruments making a wide noise that supports the melody. We’ve got pretty much everything covered in the band, listening wise, lots of old and lots of new and our bassist even listens to Elbow, thank fuck he’s so good looking.

You have two songs on Amazon for download how has it been going so far and when/how can we get 'Gravity' and 'Cimmerian Days' ?
It’s been going surprisingly well. We only put it up there to see if anyone would buy them and they’ve been selling healthily here and in the states as well. Gravity isn’t mixed yet, we just stuck it up to gage reaction and really pissed off the producer! We’ll be releasing a whole bunch of singles across the next year or so, including Cimmerian days so keep an eye out.
